Introduction
We are trying to make Steep Meadow as accessible as possible to everyone. The situation of the house on the hillside means we are somewhat restricted by the landscape.
- If you have any special requirements please let us know in advance.
Pre-Arrival
There is a bus service from beside the White Horse pub into Monmouth and Coleford about 4 times a day.
The walk from the pub to the house takes 5-7 minutes uphill.
The nearest railway station is Lydney about 25 minutes by car.
Taxis can be booked in advance.
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
Steep Meadow is built into the side of a hill. The property is accessed straight off the lane.
• There are no kerbs.
• Parking is outside the house on the slightly sloping gravelled driveway.
• The driveway in front of the house is lit at night when required and has solar powered lights as well.
• From the driveway there is a wide level paved path to the front door and there is only a weather strip to step over into the house. To reach Beech you can drive down the drive and it is a short step over a gravelled surface.
Assistance with luggage is always offered to all guests.
Main Entrance & Reception
Entrance is into the sitting room and reception.
Guests are escorted to rooms and all the facilities explained.

- The house is no smoking throughout the premises.
Mobile phones just about work in the house (due to the amount of insulation we have!) but by an open window or outside they are fine. We have portable handsets for our landline so please ask if you need to use one.
Bedrooms
Beech is accessed from the driveway . Oak and Rowan bedrooms are on the lower ground floor – there are 6 steps (each 19cm) down a small landing then another 6 steps down.
There is a wooden handrail all the way down on the left.
- All windows have locks and can be locked in an open position to allow free flow of air.
• The bedrooms are painted white with oak doors.
• Doors can be locked from the inside but not from the outside as they have Suffolk latches.
• We provide a safe in the rooms for your use.
- Televisions in all rooms have remote controls and teletext/subtitles.
A bell is provided in the central corridor and on the shelf by the stairs to call for assistance.
Carpets are all fitted short pile - Beech has oak floorboards and rugs, with tiled floors in all ensuite shower rooms.
•All bedrooms have king sized beds (Rowan - 54cm mattress height, Oak - mattress height 54cm and Beech mattress height 54cm) all with good access from both sides.
• Oak bedroom can be accessed from the garden – there is one step down into the sunken garden from the drive and one step up into the bedroom.
Beech room is the same as Oak and Rowan with the exception that it has one step into the building.
Ensuite shower rooms
Oak room has a wet room with no step but a slight slope to the drain. Basin height 91cm, toilet seat height is 43cm.
Rowan has a single step into the shower. Basin height 84cm, toilet seat height is 43cm.
Beech has a single step into the shower. Basin height 89cm toilet seat height 43cm. All have white walls/pale tiles and oak doors.
Laundry
We can provide drying facilities and items can be laundered for a small charge. We use a non-biological washing powder and everything is rinsed twice.
Garden and Grounds
There is a small sunken garden at the side of the house which leads with one step to another garden area with wildlife pond and seat. The ground slopes at the side. The path is gravel.
• There is a gate into the field where the Dexters live – the field is what gives the house its name as it is a very steep meadow.
• The goats live in the field across the road - Please note that goats will want to nibble your clothing or hand to see if they are any good to eat if you visit them!
• We are quite happy for you to visit the cows, goats, pigs or chickens but would request that you ask one of us to accompany you – animals can be nervous of strangers.
- Please be aware that we have 2 cats which spend most of the time outside but occasionally sneak in. We also have 2 small dogs that live in the utility room. Neither cats nor dogs are allowed downstairs.
From the lane in front of the house you can walk onto the Meend or into the woods – the walks are all either uphill or downhill due to the situation of the house. The lane is tarmac but is often uneven in places and the paths are grass or earth.
Shops
The village of Staunton has a pub which is closed at the moment for refurbishment but is in easy walking distance 5 minutes downhill -10 minutes back up - but no shops.
Coleford is 3 miles away and Monmouth 3.5 miles - both have a good selection of banks and food shops.
