We believe that local food does make a difference.

Food miles, food quality and the need to know where our food comes from has instilled us the desire to produce our own meat, eggs honey, and veggies.

We try to source local raw materials and produce that are of exceptional quality, which for our guests means good quality, healthy produce and this in turn benefits the local economy and supports local jobs.

With this in mind we raise old fashioned breeds of pig which take longer than modern pigs to mature.

Helen’s hens go in and out of their hen house when they like, they forage amongst the grass and stones. The weather makes no difference to them – it can be sunny, cold, raining or snowing and they will always be happy scratching around looking for food.

They do have to have fencing around their run due to Mr Fox. When we allowed them complete freedom in the field, their number reduced drastically although Mr Fox and his family were happy.

The eggs we get have delicious deep yellow yolks and the whites of the egg are thicker. They have a richer, more intense flavour because the hens have plenty of access to grass and earthworms that gives the yolks their golden colour and also are happier living in a more natural environment – you can taste the difference.

We are on the borders of Monmouthshire and Herefordshire so we have 3 counties to choose from and they produce some fine foods and it is our policy to use local supplies and suppliers wherever possible.

The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean produces some marvellous food and drink.

We are followers of the Slow food movement and therefore all breakfasts are prepared & cooked freshly.

  • Waste food

Due to regulations this cannot be fed to the pigs but we have a wormery - the worms love kitchen waste and paper napkins so they deal with our food waste thus avoiding it going into landfill plus the worms provide us with fabulous compost for the garden and a marvellous liquid fertiliser.
